A first responders worst nightmare. The biggest downfall of working where you live. I think about this every time one of my kids goes out with their friends. Condolences to you and your friend.

I pray that this man lost his badge over this. There is no excuse for this. This stupid douchebag, being a cop, should be desensitized to verbal displays of emotion, however "foul." He just put a man's life at risk because he was offended by the "F" word. Extremely unprofessional. He's taken the civil duty to protect and serve on his shoulders, nobody gives a damn what offends him. The people he protects come first, his personal biases come a distant second. I hope he's never allowed to have that kind of responsibility again.

Just found your blog tonight.

This makes me glad that the only mental health facilities I am allowed to transport to are within hospitals. We can't be turned away thanks to COBRA.

Hey there --

I just discovered your blog, and I've been reading through the older posts. I'm a gay medic -- well, former medic, since I'm a surgical resident now -- and my preceptor/training officer was also gay. (Still is, actually, just not my training officer any more.)

Life sucks at times, and you take support and joy where you can find them, whether other people approve or not. You don't quiz patients as to their sexual orientation before you treat them; if they object to gay medics, then they can always decline to call 911 when they have an emergency.

Theres always been those calls that hit a bit too close to home. The patient who looks like your brother or your wife. The patient who knows some of the same people you do. I've never had to work on somebody I know and love in the manner your friend did and to be honest with you I'd probably do the same thing.
Be safe and be well.

Dodge, I am so saddened to hear about your friend and his daughter. It was a blessing that it was you that was there next to your friend when the doctor gave him the dreaded news. However, I know it was also very hard for you to go through as well. It is very comforting to me to know that there are medics like you and Rod close to my neck of the woods, as if anything ever happened to me, I would want you two to be there with me. I truly don't know how you do it, but please keep up the great work you do.

Love ya friend,
Susie B
